The government’s Green Homes Grant

The government’s Green Homes Grant scheme, announced in July 2020, is live.

The grant can cover two-thirds of the cost of specified energy-efficient improvements on homes in England up to a maximum of £5,000, or £10,000 for those on certain benefits.
What green measures can be funded?

Home improvement measures are split into ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ measures. The voucher must be used to fund at least one primary measure and in addition any number of secondary measures provided the amount contributed to the cost of the secondary measures does not exceed the amount for primary measures.

The primary measure must be put in place first and the vouchers for this redeemed before vouchers for the secondary measure are used.

Primary measures

Primary measures include the following types of insulation:

• Solid wall insulation
• Cavity wall insulation
• Under-floor insulation
• Loft insulation
• Flat roof insulation
• Pitched roof insulation
• Room in roof insulation
• Park home insulation

Low carbon heating installations are also included:

• Air source heat pump
• Ground source heat pump
• Solar thermal
• Biomass boiler
• Hybrid heat pump

Secondary measures

The following are classed as secondary measures:

• Draught-proofing of windows and doors
• Double or triple-glazing
• Secondary glazing
• Energy-efficient replacement doors
• Hot water tank thermostat
• Hot water tank insulation
• Heating controls

Applying for the Green Homes Grant

Applicants will need to find installers who have been accredited to carry out the work by searching on the government endorsed advice site simpleenergyadvice.org.uk. Once they have a quote for the work, they can apply for the voucher, which will be valid for three months from date of issue or until 31 March 2021 (whichever is earlier).

When the voucher is redeemed, the grant is paid directly to the installer.

The offer is open to landlords as well as homeowners.
