Top ten most in-demand home improvements

Comparison site Uswitch has taken a look at online searches to discover which home improvements are the most popular.

From making changes in the garden to adding an extension, we take a look at what projects property owners are considering. Whether you want to make your property more suitable for your needs, carry out repairs and maintenance or undertake a project that will add value, there are always benefits to be had in undertaking home improvements.

Uswitch has found that millions of online searches are carried out each year looking at different options.

The most popular, with over 13 million searches, was building a shed. This can possibly be attributed to the shed’s versatility. From a humble place to keep the lawnmower to a gym or garden office, sheds have the potential for a multitude of uses.

Interest in the outside continues with number two on the list, which is landscaping. Tailoring outside space to suit changing needs is ever popular, particularly in the summer months.

With energy prices soaring and attempts being made to reduce consumption, attic insulation was third on the list. Not only does insulation keep a home warmer, but it can also substantially reduce energy bills. In hot weather, it can also keep the home cooler.

Carrying out a loft conversion was fourth. A more substantial project, this has the potential to add considerable value to a property if carried out well and in compliance with planning and building regulations. The addition of one or more extra bedrooms can also make a home more desirable when you come to sell.

Surprisingly, installing an outdoor kitchen was sixth on the list, above replacing the roof and remodelling the bathroom.

Funding home improvements

If you are thinking of taking on more ambitious home improvement projects such as an extension or loft conversion, you might be considering remortgaging. You should look at your financial situation carefully before going ahead to check what you can realistically afford, to include taking into account potential interest rate rises.

You will need to instruct a solicitor to represent you in dealing with your remortgage. If you would like to speak to us, we will be happy to let you have a breakdown of the legal and other costs involved.
