If you watch property programmes, you will have heard of kerb appeal – the first impression that a home makes from the outside. But does it really matter? And if so, how can you get it?
Today, many people make up their minds about buying a property before they’ve even walked through the front door. So, if you want to sell quickly (and get the best possible price) from discerning buyers, making a good first impression matters.
To help you, here are our top tips to ensure your property has that all-important kerb appeal.
Repaint
A fresh coat of paint can make all the difference. Take a few steps back, and look at your home as if you have never seen it before. Do the walls need a lick of paint, do the windows need repainting or staining, or could the door benefit from a freshen up? If the answer is yes, be sure to choose a colour that suits your property and its setting.
Tidy up the garden
Quite often, kerb appeal can be increased merely by cutting the grass, trimming the hedges, and getting rid of any weeds. Pretty plant pots can also make sure your front garden looks well-maintained and welcoming. If you have space, consider setting up some garden furniture to show that it is a place to be enjoyed.
Declutter
Too much stuff lying about can put potential buyers off, especially if it makes your home look small. To make your home feel airy and light, remove what you can and put bigger items (e.g. bikes) in storage. Also, be sure to clear away those unattractive rubbish bins!
Fix any bigger issues
If you notice any bigger and/or structural problems, get the advice of an expert. If fixing them is out of the question, having quotes ready to reassure buyers of what is needed will be hugely valuable.
Get a second opinion
If you have lived in your home for a long time, it’s easy to overlook its faults. Ask a trusted friend or neighbour what they think about the outside of your home and any changes they would make.
Freshen up your front door
You want your home to feel welcoming. So, as well as giving the door a lick of paint, think about how you can create a perfect first impression. This could be as simple as adding some pot plants to your entrance, replacing the old knocker, fixing the bell, and making sure that all the light bulbs are working. If your front door is gloomy and in need of repair, people will be uneasy about your home before they even step through the door.
Check any outdoor lighting
Make sure that all outdoor lights are working correctly. This is especially important if you’re likely to have viewings during the winter months.
Clean your windows
Just giving your windows a clean can help to improve that vital first impression. It will also make your rooms look better from the inside of your property.
