Tips to make your home more attractive to buyers

First impressions count and it only takes minutes for prospective buyers to make up their minds about your home.

So, if you want to sell quickly and get the best possible price, it pays to put a little effort in before you put it on the market.

Here are our top tips to ensure your home stands out for all the right reasons.

  1. Make the right first impression

Most people have a tidy up before showing buyers around. But did you know that many people will make up their minds before they’ve even walked through the front door?

As well as clearing out the clutter, polishing the shiny surfaces, and vacuuming the floors, be sure to tidy up outside to boost your kerb appeal.

As well as cutting the grass and getting rid of any weeds, consider if there are any maintenance jobs that need doing. For example, could your front door benefit from a lick of paint? And, be sure to clear away those unattractive rubbish bins!

  1. Declutter

Over the years, most of us accumulate too much stuff. But this can put potential buyers off – especially if it makes your home look cluttered and cramped!

A room with a lot of things in it can appear smaller than it is. It can also be difficult for people to imagine living somewhere with too many personal belongings.

So, to make your home feel airy and light, remove what you can and put bigger items (e.g. bikes and unnecessary furniture) in storage.

Start with the entrance hall and then go from room to room to identify what you can remove or put away. At the very least, pet items such as food bowls and litter boxes should be kept out of sight.

  1. Add some warmth

While you want your home to feel spacious, you don’t want to remove all the personality. Consider how you can add texture and colour to your home. Plants, candles, bowls of fruit and fresh flowers will all bring a room to life, add warmth to your décor, and create a welcoming first impression. You should also check that all the light bulbs are working.

  1. Ask for a second opinion

When you live somewhere for a long time, you can become blind to its faults. Ask a friend or neighbour to give you an honest assessment of your home and any changes they would make.

If you’re ready to sell your home but finding the prospect daunting, talking to someone with experience can make the whole process seem much more straightforward.
