Today is International Women’s Day: There’s no glass ceiling at LPL

We’re celebrating some of the women that help make LPL such a successful practice and dynamic workplace.

At LPL, we’re immensely proud of our record on diversity and inclusion. Nowhere is this clearer  than in the make up of our senior management team, where over 75% of our senior team are women.

Louise Stephens-Pantoja, Head of Operations at LPL said: “There’s no glass ceiling at LPL.

“We wholeheartedly believe that a large part of our success is down to recruiting, developing and promoting the very best talent – regardless of their culture, background or gender.”

“I’ve spent more than 30 years working in legal and financial services and nowhere have I felt more valued than I do right now. It’s incredibly rewarding to work for a company with such a strong female voice and I love knowing that I don’t have to work harder and speak louder to make sure I am heard.”

Women’s representation in the legal sector

Women have faced an uphill battle to have their work recognised in the legal sector. Passed in 1919, the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act first opened the door for women to become lawyers. In practical terms, however, the sector has long been considered a Boys Club.

Times have started to change. The Law Society say that women have represented more than 60% of new entrants to the profession since 1990 and that there are now more women practicing as solicitors than men.

But significant barriers to fair representation still remain at the top of the profession. According to a 2017 survey, female partners made up just 18% of the UK’s top 10 law firms. This rose to 19% for the next 15 biggest firms.

A picture of women’s representation in senior leadership roles in the UK. Women make up:

  • 18% of partners in top 10 UK law firms
  • 2% of FTSE 250 CEOs
  • 3% of FTSE 250 HR directors
  • 6% of FTSE 250 finance directors
  • 8% of MPs in the House of Commons
  • 5% of Lords in the House of Lords

“A great place to learn and progress”

Stephanie Maydew, Head of Training and Quality at LPL said: “LPL is a fantastic place for enthusiastic and ambitious Conveyancers both qualified and unqualified to learn and progress in their careers.

“I have worked in this industry for 14 years and was recruited by LPL 12 months ago to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for professional development with their valued workforce.  I have taken great satisfaction in mentoring and developing their staff both new and existing, so that they are able to reach their full potential.  I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside some fantastic women inside and outside the company and I truly believe that the workplace culture and values have allowed me to voice my ideas and opinions whilst feeling supported and inspired.”

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Fiaz Khalid, Partner at LPL said “Equality and Diversity are fundamental building blocks of our organisation and I am delighted to work with such a wonderful team of individuals”
