Where are properties selling the fastest?

New data from home-selling platform Rightmove has revealed where in the UK homes are selling the fastest. We take a look at the leading locations and how many days it takes on average for sellers there to find a buyer.

Rightmove notes that across the country the average time taken to move has increased from 33 days at the same time one year ago in 2023 to 55 days now. This is still quicker than the pre-pandemic time in March 2019 of 67 days.

Rightmove’s Tim Bannister explained: “The current market conditions will suit home-movers who were perhaps put off by the frenetic market conditions of this time last year, when the average time to find a buyer was near a record low.

“Despite what will feel like calmer conditions, the market is still moving more quickly than before the pandemic started. We’re now seeing more buyers returning to cities and within commuting distance of an office.”

Fastest time to find a buyer

The Scottish town of Falkirk in Stirlingshire tops the list as the fastest place for sellers to find a buyer, at an average of 22 days. The average asking price for a home in the town stands at £148,736.

The most expensive place in the top five is next. Broxburn in West Lothian took only 23 days to find a buyer, with an average asking price of £201,648.

Third was Renfrew, taking 24 days and with an average asking price of £149,970. A total of seven of the top ten places are in Scotland.

Areas where selling speed has increased since last year

Despite the overall trend of properties taking longer to sell than one year ago, sellers in some areas are finding a buyer more quickly. These include Windsor in Berkshire, Knaphill in Surrey and Cowley in Oxfordshire.

Terraced houses are the type of property selling the fastest, at an average of 48 days, while detached houses are taking the longest at 65 days.

Areas where selling speed has decreased since last year

Last year, several areas near the coast were seeing the most activity. This year, that has eased. Four out of five of the slowest areas to sell are currently at or near the coast. These include Ferndown in Dorset, Brixham in Devon and Heysham in Lancashire.
